February 28, 2000....My first day at WAVY-TV.
February 28, 2008....MY first Bon Jovi Concert!!!!!!
I think I will remember both of these days for the rest of my life.
First of all I can't believe I've been here for 8 years. The time has flown by. I thought I'd be here 3 years and out! I was moving on to bigger and better things. Little did I know 8 years later I'd be married and still living here in the great Commonwealth.
More importantly I can't believe I'm 33 years old and have never been to a Bon Jovi concert!!!!!! I've always been a fan. I love the music. We even danced our first dance at our wedding to a Richie Sambora song. So how have I been missing out on the joy that is a Bon Jovi concert all my life?
This was a much needed "girls trip" to Washington, D.C. Nine ladies in our 30's and 40's, a fridge full of beer and food, and tickets to see Jon and the rest of the boys. What could be better? Answer: pretty much nothing!
As we entered the Verizon Center I was really surprised to see how many children were there with their parents. Seven and eight years old at a Bon Jovi concert? I don't think my parents would of ever allowed that. Although, now that I think about it, I have faint memories of a Peter, Paul and Mary concert that kept me up past my bedtime...but that's another story.
Our seats weren't too far from the top. We were also almost behind the stage. I didn't really care. I can have a good time anywhere. In front of us we had a few people that must have thumbs of steel. They were texting the entire pre-show, opening act and concert. Not my way of enjoying the show! In the same row was a "grandma type" woman that sat in her chair, but clapped and sang along the entire show. (By "grandma type" I mean an older grey hair woman that gives her grandchildren candy, quarters, and lots of love...a typical Polish Babcza). She was having the time of her life. I think I was probably singing louder, but I did have a few years and a few beers on her.
My enjoyment of the show came in the realization that Jon and the boys have been singing some of the same songs for 20+ years. Sure there were the newer, slower, softer releases, but the ones that really got the crowd going were old faithfuls like, "You Give Love a Bad Name" and "Livin' on a Prayer". I'm pretty sure these songs were released when I was in the 5th grade. T
hey became anthems for my middle school years. To watch Jon belt out those tunes with the energy of a 25 year old in a 45 year old body was just inspiring. He was jumping and waiving his very buff arms and smiling like he was really having a great time. (Some of us think he should come out with an aerobics video based on a concert...I'd buy that!) I got the impression that it was genuine. Now he really could be great at faking it, but I just don't think so. And when he smiled I got the feeling he was smiling at me. He may have even pointed and reached out for me a few times. I'm blushing at the thought of that!
We all had such a wonderful time. We were little runaways for a day. Rockers and Rollers. Remembering our younger years through the songs that brought us here. In the end we followed Jon's advise and made a memory.
